The Ultimate Spring Home Maintenance Checklist for NJ Homeowners
Spring is your chance to catch problems early, before they become expensive emergencies in the summer.
New Jersey winters are hard on homes. Between the freeze-thaw cycles, heavy snow loads, ice dams, and all that road salt, your house has been through a lot by the time March rolls around. Spring is your chance to catch problems early, before they become expensive emergencies in the summer.
Exterior Walk-Around
- Inspect your roof from the ground. Look for missing, cracked, or curling shingles.
- Check all exterior caulking around windows, doors, and where siding meets trim.
- Examine your foundation for new cracks. Cracks wider than a quarter inch need professional attention.
- Clean and inspect gutters and downspouts.
- Look for wood rot on trim, fascia boards, window sills, and deck boards.
- Check that exterior faucets work and aren't leaking from frost damage.
Deck and Patio
- Inspect deck boards for warping, splintering, and rot. Replace damaged boards now.
- Tighten loose railings and balusters.
- Power wash the deck and patio.
- Consider re-staining or sealing your deck if it's been more than two years.
Windows and Doors
- Open and close every window. Make sure they operate smoothly and lock properly.
- Check screens for holes and tears.
- Adjust doors that stick or don't latch correctly.
- Replace weatherstripping on any door that shows daylight or lets in a draft.
Interior Systems
- Replace HVAC filters and schedule your AC tune-up before the summer rush.
- Test all smoke detectors and CO detectors. Replace batteries.
- Flush your water heater to clear sediment buildup.
- Check under every sink for leaks.
Basement and Crawl Space
- Look for signs of moisture, mold, or water intrusion.
- Test your sump pump before heavy spring rains.
- Inspect for any pest entry points.
Safety and Quality of Life
- Tighten loose handrails on stairs (interior and exterior).
- Fix tripping hazards: uneven thresholds, loose carpet edges, raised deck boards.
- Recaulk tubs and showers if the caulk is cracking or pulling away.
- Touch up interior paint where scuffs and marks accumulated over winter.
